Nasirud-din Murat-Khan

Nasirud-din Murat graduated with triple degrees in architecture, town planning, and civil engineering from Leningrad State University in 1930. He enjoyed a thoroughly successful career in the capacity of both as a chief civil engineer and as a chief architect involved in several projects in the USSR such as the national theatre in the city of Derbent, a polytechnic institute for 800 students in Makhachkala, a 600-bed hospital in the same city, town planning and designing of a new township for 60,000 families (over 100,000 people) in Makhachkala and other numerous projects. In Pakistan, he designed multiple structures as well including 1,000-bed Nishtar Hospital in Multan, a mental hospital of 500 bed in Mansehra, Division Public School in Lahore and Faisalabad, 700+ seating capacity auditorium in Forman Christian College, Municipal office in Multan, Mosque in the Governor’s house and many other to count. The most iconic gift given by the architect was Minar-e-Pakistan for which he didn’t charge a penny and to which he gave the reason that he wanted to show gratitude to the country who gave him his final home. There is a misconception that he was only the architect of the monument but in reality, he was both architect and engineer of the monument. Originally, the top of the monument didn’t have a covering to signify the young country’s infinite, promising growth. The committee overseeing the project changed the design to a dome to signify Islamic architecture, which was contested heavily by Nasirud din. He told the committee that they are stunting the growth of the country by changing the design but the committee didn’t budge. They even excluded him from the project two weeks before the inauguration and sent him the final bill which he rejected because he wanted to pass the bill after removing errors and defects. The committee went forward with their decision and inaugurated the monument without even inviting the man who gave everything to it. According to his daughter, he was heart-broken and devastated and he wanted to leave Pakistan but unfortunately, he died a year after, with a broken heart.

10 Lessons I Learned After Architecture School

10 Lessons I Learned After Architecture School Architecture is a profession of passion. To some, the decision to be an architect is a very difficult one. The long duration of the study; the search for a job after, plays an essential part in the decision. It requires determination, hard work, and a passion for the subject matter that goes beyond normal curiosity. If like me, you survived your university years with a higher level of curiosity and a stronger passion for architecture, you might have considered what next. Months of portfolio edits, rejections, and interviews that seem to go nowhere, will eventually secure you a job. It will take a few tries to navigate the workplace. Mistakes and failings might occupy you. Flaws are necessary. It has taken me years of failing, asking questions, and reading on the subject to understand this. I had envisioned a different pace of my personal development, and failing was hard to take. I had to learn to cope and to use them as catalyzes of future success. This is an amalgamation of years of advice, research, and personal epiphanies. In talking to friends and people within and outside the profession, I have compiled this, as only a guide to help you get through your architectural practice. I want, to begin with, what I believe is the most important point: 1. NETWORKING. The world of architecture is hidden to all outside its scope. To be successful, it is important to build a community around you. So talk to people about what you do; listen to them, when they speak about their professions and most of all, be curious! Take every chance to go to and to be part of networking events. Your progress needs to collect new contacts. Take every opportunity to make new friends, from all walks of life. You never know who is next to you. 2. COMMUNICATION. The human being remains the center of most architectural philosophies. As such, communication is key. Learn therefore how to communicate with peers, superiors, and most importantly, clients. In meetings, be confident: where you believe your input can create, enhance or elevate a solution, find the right manner of voicing them. Do not be timid but rather a part of the office’s conversations. Lastly, keep in touch with digital visualization innovation. 3. STAND OUT. In the office, you can be stuck in a routine, doing the same thing over and over again. If your aspirations are beyond the scope of that horizon, then seek it. Show your employer, your potential and effectiveness. If your interest lays within green technology, sustainability, or BIM, immerse yourself in it. Become an expert. Learn all you can about the subject; take the seminars, subscribe to the relevant magazines or journals, and become the go-to person for information and expertise in that chosen area. 4. SKETCH. A designer’s most effective skill is the ability to think through sketches. If you were to have a look, at the greats: from the likes of Palladio to the recently departed Zaha Hadid, you might see; they all sketched, all drew. In your arsenal, is a tool that is most ignored in the lure of the accurate possibilities of technology. But I urge you, to look at the world through your sketches. Analyze buildings, places, and anything that intrigues you, through your own sketches. Develop your skill, your own personal style. Most importantly, get yourself a sketchbook. An Architect should go nowhere without his/her sketchbook and a pencil or two. 5. WORK ETHIC. Okay, we have all seen the memes, showing architects not sleeping, shabby and exhausted. To be effective, you have to put in the hours. You will work long hours; and yes, you will have some all-nighters. All I can say is, show your passion, work effectively and you would be able to demand your worth. It would be arduous, but ultimately it will be worth it. 6. EDUCATE YOURSELF. Yes! You have finished your degree program, completed your professional studies. It doesn’t end there, unfortunately. Knowledge is infinite. As designers of such things as space, we must keep hold of education. In the professional setting, there are laws that you must be up to date with. Above that, acquire knowledge for your own benefit. I beseech you, keep informed, read more, get the TED app; learn from the success and failures of others. 7. MENTORSHIP. Simply put, find yourself a mentor, within or without your place of work. Someone to look up to; to give you advice when needed and a push when required. On the other side of the coin, become a mentor yourself. Share your knowledge with someone else. Besides, it forces you to learn some more, so you can build on your own knowledge. 8. LEARN THE BUSINESS OF ARCHITECTURE. While studying, we seek the best design approaches, best software, etc. We forget to ask a simple question, how does the business of architecture work? Learn how the business works; how to get and keep clients; when and where we get paid; learn tendering and all the other aspects of running an effective office. 9. EMBRACE YOUR FAILURES. The certainty is, within the course of your professional career, you are going to fail. This is an inevitable truth. So learn to acquire wisdom from your failures. I remember a lecturer of mine, telling us never to use the word, ‘problem’ when it came to our designs. Rather, he asked us to see them as opportunities. See your failures in the same light; from your failings find future triumph. 10. LASTLY, KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE PRIZE. It is imperative to remember why you entered into this profession. Maybe you wish to change the world; wish to see your skyscraper as part of the London or New York skyline or maybe you want to diminish the carbon footprint of architecture. Whatever your goal is, keep it at hand. Let your passion direct you. For the next few years, you

9 Ways to Prepare Your Home for a Cosy Autumn

9 Ways to Prepare Your Home for a Cosy Autumn As the days get crisper and leaves start falling, it’s time to turn your home into a warm haven Amanda Pollard 6 October 2016 Sheher Saaz UK Autumn is a beautiful season, with its orange and yellow leaves and bright red berries. It’s the perfect time to wrap up for a walk – then come back to an inviting home. Follow these tips to get the most from your four walls this autumn. Ramp up the warmth and cosiness As the days and evenings become colder, you’ll need to think about keeping warm. First things first – get yourself some soft throws and blankets. Then attend to the bigger stuff, like making sure your radiators are all bled and having your boiler checked. If you’re lucky enough to have a working fireplace or wood-burning stove, now’s the time to prepare it for use. It’s important to have your chimney swept and tested once a year. Look for a chimney sweep who’s registered with the National Association of Chimney Sweeps or the Guild of Master Chimney Sweeps. Stock up on firewood and kindling, and invest in a couple of baskets to store it next to the fire. Most importantly, make sure your smoke alarms are all working. Pep up your entrance Cheer yourself up on colder days by creating a warm welcome to your home. Autumn is the perfect time to spruce up your front door, as it’s generally still mild enough to paint outside. Choose a cheerful colour that will make everyone smile. Make sure you give the wood a good sand beforehand and buy an exterior paint that will protect it in all weathers. It’s also a good idea to take the hardware off beforehand, so now might be a good time to invest in a brand-new doorknob or letterbox. The rest of the front garden might need a tidy up, too. After all, you’ll probably see more of the front than the back garden during the winter. Plant some evergreen shrubs that will provide an attractive structure throughout the cold months, and add a couple of winter-flowering plants to boost interest. Make way for wellies The hallway will need a seasonal overhaul, too. Put away sandals and sun hats till the spring and organise space for larger outerwear. Make sure there are enough hooks for all your heavy coats, as well as a stand for umbrellas. It’s also a good idea to put a basket next to the door for gloves, hats and scarves. Lastly, allocate enough room for everyone’s wellies to be neatly stored after a muddy autumn walk. Prepare for wholesome dining With autumn comes delicious food: warming soups, roast dinners and hearty breakfasts. Prepare a dining area where you can enjoy some cold-weather fuel with friends or family. The simple linen tablecloth and white crockery here looks lovely with the wooden furniture and rattan basket. Collect some bare twigs or branches during an autumn walk and put them in a vase, as these homeowners have done. The display will last all winter, and then you can replace it with spring flowers. Get organised I think September and October are a great time for new resolutions, as you’re not recovering from the excesses of Christmas. Use the ‘back-to-school’ feel of these months to get your home organised and ready for winter action. Put away your summer wardrobe and have a declutter at the same time. Organise your filing and invest in any new storage you think you might need. Now might be a good time to organise your kitchen cupboards, too. Throw away out-of-date food and store similar things together. Decant pasta, rice and pulses into attractive jars, and find some useful storage for your spices. Locate a window seat Even if you’re not planning to venture outside often, it’s still nice to capture daylight from the comfort of an armchair. Rearrange furniture so some of your seating is facing a window. On a cold, crisp day, you can cosy up with a blanket and a book while watching the leaves fall from the trees. Organise outside lighting On a dark evening, arriving home or visiting the shed or dustbins will be difficult if you can’t see where you’re going. So it’s important to ensure any outside lighting is in good working order. It’s also nice to have some lighting in the back garden to illuminate winter plants. TheAmelanchier lamarckii tree on the right here has a lovely sculptural shape that looks beautiful lit up. The tree is a good choice, as it has pleasant autumn colour, followed by early flowering blossom. Create a spa bathroom Quick summer showers make way for indulgent baths and pampering in the autumn. No matter how small your bathroom is, it’s possible to give it a luxurious spa feel. Invest in some scented candles and reed diffusers, as well as a few good-quality soaps and oils. Place rolled-up towels in a basket to give the room a hotel look, then close the door and escape for an hour or two of rest and relaxation. Cosy up at bedtime Turn your bedroom into a warm, restful haven by adding some thicker textiles to the bed. Here, crisp white bed linen has been given a cosier feel with a knitted throw and cushion. Just by adding a few accessories, you can make an instant transformation from summer to autumn. The vase of flowers on the bedside adds to the natural warmth of the room. It’s the perfect place to enjoy a cup of tea in bed on a Sunday morning. Do you enjoy autumn, or are you more keen on warmer weather? How do you prepare your home for the new season?
